Tekel means ‘weighed’-you have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up. Mene means ‘numbered’-God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end. It is rather ironic that Belshazzar has to swallow his sardonic pride and get Daniel, a Jew to translate for him: “This is the message that was written: Mene, mene, tekel, and Parsin. Perhaps, significant to this discussion, we read of Belshazzar's debauched feast where he made fun of his Jewish captives by taking the temple vessels and drinking from them. Daniel 5 records the events surrounding the last days of Babylon.
